Book Review: Kotter’s Leading Change

Book Review: Kotter’s Leading Change

Kotter

This book is the seminal text on organizational change for a reason.  It’s part of my, “Remember What You Learned in Your MBA Book Tour.”  It’s centered around the 8 steps that you might have known intuitively, but can really use in your arsenal on paper:

  1. Communicate the Vision
  2. Empower Action
  3. Create Quick Wins
  4. Create Urgency
  5. Form a Powerful Coalition
  6. Create a Vision for Change
  7. Build on the Change
  8. Make it Stick

These are the reason you buy the book… but I actually got significantly more enjoyment out of the last chapter.  Kotter covers how the fact that the pace of change is starting to produce leaders that are dedicated to a lifetime of learning.  He follows several current leaders who didn’t look like leaders until late in their careers.  As a guy writing a book review blog post on a vacation day, I hope he’s right.
