As 2016 wound down and I started thinking about things that I really ought to be doing, and I added JonathanCavell.com to the list. This was partly because I missed occasionally writing out a blog post or reviewing a book, but honestly it had most to do with the existing site falling apart. Expired plugins, out of date caricatures, and several outdated references to me still living in Pittsburgh were unprofessional. The site itself had become a bit of a cesspool for some of the seedier SEO actors… actually causing a few people to ask me to remove links to their site because my internet home had apparently made one of Google’s bad lists. So to clean all that up and give me a platform should I choose to use it, I’m relaunching on this page.
The new site is significantly simpler with a goal of making maintenance easier. Gone are the blogroll, the elaborate about me pages, the graphics driven interface, and the Facebook connectivity. I also took the opportunity to learn a little bit and built an Amazon EC2 instance to host the site. If you have any suggestions or anything in particular you miss, please let me know.
The reality of my job is that I’m doing less and less that will have mass public appeal (less startups and more enterprise software development). That said, I will try to take to this forum when I think I have something interesting to say. The topics will probably include books I’m reading on technology or software dev management, personal technology I find useful, big trends in tech, and the occasional opinion piece. I imagine that anyone who used to read this blog is long gone, but if you still have a subscription somewhere I hope you’ll update it and we’ll see if we can’t get an occasional conversation started.
